FUNDING NEWS
The Marsh Christian Trust makes annual grants totalling around £140,000 to support registered charities, with particular emphases that include social welfare, environmental causes, education and training. Grants range from £250 to £4,000 and are decided at monthly trustee meetings. Applications should be made in writing and include most recent accounts. The John Pitman Charitable Trust supports charities which enable people to live their life more fully, particularly in the fields of accommodation and housing, community facilities and various community services. The most recent accounts show annual grants totalling £26,000. The trust has a preference for supporting organisations in London and the south east of England. There is no website. The Girdlers' Company Charitable Trust have grant- funding priorities that include education, welfare, youth welfare, and Christian religion. Their annual grants exceed £500,000 and the closing date for general applications is the last Friday of January and August each year. There is no website, but phone 020 7448 4851 or email.
The Kellogg's Active Living Fund makes grants of up to £1,000 for projects that remove the barriers which stop people being active. In particular:
- projects that get non-active individuals active;
- expanding existing projects so that they are available to new groups or in new areas;
- new or replacement equipment for existing projects.

The Breathing Places programme is a UK-wide small grants programme developed in partnership with the BBC. It is funded by the Big Lottery and the closing date for the current round (phase 3, totalling £5m) is 18 January 2008. The aim of phase 3 is to: increase the number and range of people making use of, and helping to develop and maintain, breathing places, and make a lasting improvement to the natural environment. (A breathing space is defined as 'a green space that benefits wildlife and the local community'.) Grants range between £1,000 and £10,000. The Vardy Foundation makes annual grants totalling over £500,000 to Christian causes, with a bias towards education and the north east of England. There is no website or published guidelines. TRAINING NEWS AND EVENTS

In partnership with Stewardship Services and Community Money Advice, the Baptist Union Mission Department are running three Money Advice Facilitation Days on 6 March, 12 June and 18 September 2008, 10.30am - 3pm, at Baptist House, Didcot, Oxfordshire. Understanding yourself and others using the Myers- Briggs Type Indicator is being run by Action Partners Training 15-17 January, 13-15 May and 21-23 October at Bawtry Hall, Doncaster. The workshops are designed to help people understand themselves and others better, thus providing a helpful foundation for personal understanding and growth. Due to the success of the first workshops in September, Tearfund and Grooms- Shaftesbury are repeating Just People? The Micah Course on 9 February in London and 20 February in Manchester. This day will give you the material and skills to run the six-week Just People? course with your church or group. The course focuses on tackling injustice and poverty and is interactive. Sub-merge: Living Deep in a Shallow World is a new book by John Hayes (Publisher: Regal; ISBN- 10: 0830743065). For the past 25 years, John has lived and worked with those on the margins of society. Keeping Volunteers: The Art of Volunteer Retention is by Stephen McCurley and Rick Lynch, the authors of the best-selling Essential Volunteer Management. It looks at the best ways of enhancing volunteer retention and commitment, as well as the tricky issue of releasing a volunteer from service. CHANGEit is open to nominations until 15 December. This is an awards programme to do with good citizenship and positive action by young people. Campaigns can be really big or really small and fit into one of two categories:
- The Innovation Awards - For young people who want to get their campaigning idea off the ground.
- The Performance Awards - For young people who deserve to have their campaigning efforts recognised.

Church Action on Poverty has launched Just Church, a free resource to help your group or church to more fully reflect God's concern for the poor particularly through taking practical action. The main course has 12 modules, but there is a 6- week Lent course that can also be downloaded. The course has accompanying video material which can be ordered on DVD for £10 or email.
