2008: To mark Homelessness Sunday on January 27, YMCA Norfolk has published a book of short true life stories about some of the amazing people whose lives have been touched by either working for it or using one of its many services.

 

It also helps to mark the 150^th anniversary of the YMCA in Norfolk.

 

Going the Extra Mile includes the story of Gary, an ex Military Policeman who had a life-changing experience at Norwich YMCA and now helps to run its furniture project; schools pastoral worker Jo, who had to help deal with a missing school boy and bereaved children; Roger who helps prisoners in Norwich stay on the straight and narrow as they are released from jail; and Gus who builds sandcastles in the YMCA lounge at Christmas.

 

It also includes the harrowing true stories of young people in Norfolk who have been left stranded with nowhere to turn to because of problems with drugs, drink and relationships that have gone wrong.

 

YMCA Norfolk chief executive officer John Drake said: “This book contains a glimpse of the extraordinary work being undertaken on a daily basis by dedicated staff who give sacrificial service often at risk and without recognition, going the extra mile.”

 

The book was written by Frances Hollingdale and edited by Keith Morris. Free copies are being made available to local churches and YMCA projects.
