New Christian meditation sessions in Norwich
Two new drop-in meditation sessions have been launched in Norwich, based on the teachings of the World Community for Christian Meditation. Each session offers a basic introduction to the method and an experience of silent meditation in community with others.
The World Community for Christian Meditation is an ecumenical spiritual community that took form in 1991. It continues the 30-year long work undertaken by the Benedictine monk John Main - teaching Christian meditation as a means of restoring the contemplative dimension of Christian faith to the life of the church and society in general.
The Community is now directed by Laurence Freeman, who visited Norwich in June 2007 and is a student of John Main. It runs an International Centre and a retreat centre in London, and supports a family of national centres and emerging communities in over a hundred countries around the world. The Community is a kind of 'monastery without walls' which has as its spiritual foundation the local meditation group and the daily practise of meditation.
John Main, says: “The aim in Christian meditation is to allow God's mysterious and silent presence within us to become more and more the reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything we do, everything we are.”
The new drop-in meditation sessions take place on Tuesdays, 1.15 to 1.45pm at St Catherine’s Chapel, Anglican Cathedral and on Fridays, 8 to 8.30am at the Julian Shrine, St Julian’s Alley, Rouen Road.
There are also two ongoing evening groups that take place on Mondays, 7.30pm at The Norwich Christian Meditation Centre, St Augustine's Street, NR3 2HF (behind the old church); and on Wednesdays, 7.30pm at Nogg’s Barn, Little Melton (phone for directions.
