FUNDING NEWS
The Yapp Charitable Trust makes grants for continuation funding to small charitiesworking with elderly people; children and young people; people with disabilities or mental health problems, addictions, relationship difficulties, abuse, or a history of offending. This year they plan to give about 90 grants of up to £9,000 (for three year funding). The closing date is 26 May. The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust makes over 300 grants each year, most are between £1,000 and £5,000 with a special interest in the Warwickshire/Birmingham/Coventry area. Grant categories include social welfare, employment, education and training, homelessness, housing and offenders. The Maurice and Hilda Laing Charitable Trust makes grants totalling £1.3m annually. The Trust is a part of the John Laing Charitable Trust, whose website carries details on how to apply. Their objectives include supporting " organisations seeking to express Christian faith through practical action to help people in need, for example, those with disabilities, the homeless, the sick, young people, prisoners and ex-offenders" For more information phone Elizabeth Harley on 020 8238 8890.
The John Ellerman Foundation (UK) makes grants totalling around £4m a year to about 150 different charities. Their minimum grant is £10,000 and applications can be made at any time. Their areas of interest include health, disability and social welfare, and the website carries guidelines specific to each of these areas as well as information on how to apply. TRAINING NEWS AND EVENTS
A one-day Introduction to Homelessness Workshop is being run by Housing Justice on 7 June near King's Cross, London. It is particularly relevant to volunteers in homelessness agencies, churches and faith groups and people new to working in the field. The cost is £25 per person for member organisations, or £40 to non-members. Bursaries are available and a downloadable booking form is on the website. For those around the East Anglia area, The Guild is running a range of introductory courses in social enterprise this spring. Courses include Financial Management (12 May, Norwich), Funding your Social Enterprise (16 May, Norwich) and Recruiting Volunteers and Staff (16 June, Great Yarmouth). The courses are fully funded for any individual or group based in Norfolk; if from outside Norfolk, they are £60 + VAT per person. changes is an independent consultancy specialising in community engagement, community development and active citizenship. It is based in the West Midlands, but works across the UK. They are running five courses this year, each on an aspect of community empowerment. Safe to worship is a free half-day training course being run at Toton Methodist Church, Nottingham on 24 June. This is an opportunity to look at worship through the spectacles of survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, and to consider what can be done to make worship more comfortable. re:Source summer team is a week-long opportunity to experience urban mission in a safe learning environment. It involves training from experienced practitioners, and the opportunity to put into action what you have learnt as part of a small growing congregation on one of Bristol's large estates. Livability Community Mission and Tearfund are offering a £30 discount for Community Transformation: dream or reality? if booking fee is paid by 15 June. It is bring held at Hothorpe Hall, Leicestershire 5-7 November. Facilitated by Australian author and activist, Dave Andrews, the event will include a mix of teaching, reflective activities, sharing, personal time and optional workshops. Performance monitoring software, The Third Sector Performance Dashboard, has been produced by Social Firms UK. The tool is designed to help voluntary sector organisations of any size monitor their progress against objectives and report as appropriate. There is a free PowerPoint that explains how it works. The dashboard is available as a CD-Rom for £50 (NCVO members) or £90 (non-members).
A Rocha UK have produced an Environment Resource Pack called Planetwise to help churches and Christian groups consider a Christian response to the environmental crisis and engage their local community in practical action. The pack costs £10 or £16 with the Planetwise book of the same name. You can order online or by phoning 0208 574 5935.
In Kind Direct supplies charities and other not-for- profit organisations with a range of goods at a fraction (10-15%) of their shop price. Goods include toiletries, clothing, shoes, toys and educational items as well as computer supplies.
