Plea for Norwich help after £45k is raised

ChristianAidWeekA magnificent £45,000 was collected from the Norwich area during Christian Aid Week back in May, but the figure is down on previous years and organisers have appealed for more churches and collectors to support the scheme in time for next year.

Norwich area treasurer, Alan Rix, said: “We are delighted to confirm receipt of £41,390 from the house-to-house collections and a further £3,484 from other collections and Church activities.

“While the total raised for Christian Aid of £44,874 is approximately £3,375 lower than last year's total, it is still a magnificent sum and will do much to alleviate the suffering in some of the poorer parts of the world.  Very many thanks go to all collectors for their hard work and to those who have donated.”

But, said Alan, more help is needed: “We are very lucky with our loyal Church representatives and collectors, but many of these are over 70 years old and have found this year that some of their collectors just feel unable to continue after collecting faithfully for a great number of years.  These members are often not being replaced by younger folk.

“We collect a marvellous sum from the streets we are able to cover, and hope that we may be able to interest new churches or individuals to support us in this work. At the moment, we do not have an organiser for Drayton, so no collection was taken there, and at Costessey we collected only from a small area as some of the churches had decided to give by way of church collection only. This annual event is hugely worthwhile - please help us.”

If you can help, please contact Eldred Willey at the Christian Aid Office on 01603 620051 or by e-mail on ewilley@christian-aid.org or Alan Rix on 01603 431332 or by e-mail on alan.rix@virgin.net
