Bishop appoints clown to Norwich church
2008: The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham James, has appointed a clown to assist in the parish of Sprowston with Beeston St Andrew in Norwich.
The Revd Dean Akrill (pictured with the Bishop of Norwich) is the new Associate Vicar at Sprowston with Beeston. He has a long-standing interest and experience in the performing arts and has trained with a professional clown. In addition he writes plays, stories and poems.
The Bishop said, “We wanted to appoint an associate vicar who will be involved in all the usual aspects of parish ministry but who, in a society like ours which depends so much on information gained visually, to build on the long-standing tradition in Sprowston of telling the Christian story through drama and the performing arts.”
Dean, who comes to the Diocese from Sheffield, said, “For me the best art helps to reveal something about the human spirit and can also show us something of the divine. I hope to use drama, music, dance and clowning to help people engage with spirituality.”
