Donkeys lead churches procession in Norfolk
Around 50 Christians from the Downham Market area processed through the town behind two donkeys on the morning of Saturday 4 April.
The procession, a first for Downham, was held to commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, when he was greeted as a hero by the crowds, only to be crucified a few days later.
The event, which was organised by Downham Market and District Churches Together, made quite an impact on the town, as the participants paraded through the main streets and shopping areas singing hymns and choruses. Some waved palm leaves, while others distributed leaflets to passers-by about forthcoming Easter events and church services.
David Bizley, Pastor of Downham Market Christian Fellowship and Vice-Chair of Churches Together, said, “I hope that we succeeded in demonstrating the joy that we have as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ”.
