Norfolk teenagers experience GSUS Live
How would you help a teenager called Jack who feels rejected for being fat or perhaps Kylie who is scared she will become ill and die or even Ben who is struggling to forgive his brother?
Not easy situations to find yourself in, but these are the circumstances that many pupils faced at Acle High School during the early part of this month when GSUS Live came to visit. Fortunately, they weren't real situations - they were just part of an interactive experience on a lorry trailer which Unite (the youth organisation) was using for a week, supplied by the charity, Counties.
Matt Gooch, director of Unite explains “GSUS Live was such a good opportunity to explore how Christians deal with problems they face. We had hundreds of pupils through the trailer in one week. The experience was very high tech, professional and so engaging that the pupils couldn't help but take in all that was being said and experienced.”
The sessions were particularly aimed at Key Stage 3 pupils and were designed to complement the RE curriculum and explain the basics of the Christian gospel. Pupils entered a blacked-out room with a loud heartbeat sounding in the background. After a 3D video and a short introduction, the pupils began their interactive experience. They gave advice to the three fictional characters which led to varying consequences - some good, some not so good. At the end of the lesson the pupils heard about some real-life young people who believed that God had helped them in difficult situations.
“We are very grateful to Acle High School for allowing us into the school to take over RE lesson;, we really enjoyed it and we think the pupils did too. Hopefully, they will think about the stories a little more and perhaps be able to relate to some of the real-life scenarios that they heard” says Matt.
GSUS Live is in this part of the county for the rest of the school term, visiting various high schools, hosted by Norwich Youth For Christ. If you would like to find out more about GSUS Live, have a look at their website - www.gsuslive.co.uk
