Norfolk preacher and union champion honoured

GeorgeEdwards2009: A Norfolk Methodist local preacher and legendary agricultural reformer who championed the rights of farm workers has been honoured with the creation of a new stamp.

A special first day cover has been created to celebrate the life of Sir George Edwards (pictured right) who in 1906 founded the union that was to become the National Union of Agricultural and Allied Workers and later the rural section of the trade union Unite.

David Elvidge is the creator of the commemorative first day cover which went on sale at the eighth annual George Edwards Memorial Event at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse on Saturday June 27.

He said: "I am quite fascinated by his story and the fact he started work at six with no education. It is important to remember him because he is a true Norfolk heroes especially because of his work with agricultural workers.

“He was a man who started life in the harshest conditions rose up and was eventually knighted. It is an incredible story.”

The memorial event and talk was organised by the Norfolk branch of the rural section of Unite and the East Anglia district of the Methodist Church.
