Norwich church is heading for Hollywood

HollywoodCinemaWebBy Keith Morris

A Norwich church is heading for Hollywood after its congregation has grown so much it cannot fit into its current church buildings.

City Church, which has been serving the people of the city for more than 24 years, will be holding its next two Sunday morning services, on October 4 and 11, at the Hollywood Cinema at Anglia Square in Norwich city centre

City Church has two church buildings, City Christian Centre on Nelson Street and City Gates Centre on Cowgate. Phil Thorne, senior minister, said: “Both are great facilities but neither are any longer sufficient for accommodating the growth of City Church. This necessitates a journey of discovery for a new and larger home.”

City Church, is a multi-site church, with churches in Norwich (congregation over 150), Great Yarmouth (30) and Wymondham (over 40), has also been meeting all together several times a year in City Christian Centre.

Phil said: “City Christian Centre has been a great facility for us over the years, but it is no longer big enough to serve a growing church and growing vision. We are looking forward to the next step in finding the building to host the church. In the meantime, on October 4 and 11, we will be renting the Hollywood Cinema for our 10am Sunday services. Stuart Bell, from New life Lincoln, who oversees the Ground Level Network of churches that we are a part of, will be our guest speaker on October 4. Visitors are very welcome.”

City Church offices, based at City Gates Centre, Cowgate can be contacted on 01603 632904 or by email, admin@citychurch.co.uk for more information.

The Hollywood Cinema is part of the 1960s Anglia Square development and opened in 1971 as originally one large arena seating screen. It is now split into smaller seating areas.

City Church’s move has opened the doors to another established local church, who were looking for a church building, to make their home at City Christian Centre, and they aim to take up residence from October 11. Click here to read this story now also on the website.
