Johnny Cash helps Norwich church be on song

AvosettaProclaimers Church’s brand new series “Why All The Singing” got off to a great start on Sunday (25th October) in Norwich with help from a Johnny Cash tribute artist and local emo band Avosetta.

The series looks at why singing is such a big part of popular culture and why we do so much of it in church. “We’re hoping to show people the real power of singing both in the sense of worship and in popular culture,” said Owen Morgan, who started the series with a message that drew inspiration from the songs of Johnny Cash.

“We wanted the series to be a great opportunity for people to bring people to church which is why we invited Tommy Winn and Avosetta to the opening weekend. It’s also a great way to profile Norwich’s talent!”

Avosetta (pictured above at Proclaimers) are an up and coming Norwich-based Alternative Rock/Emo band. Fresh from their gig on Thursday night at B2 (Brickmakers), the band performed as the intro to a message by Phil Temple entitled “Why All The Screaming?” where he drew parallels between the expression of extreme emotion in modern emo music with the raw passion of David, writer of the Psalms.

For most of the band, it was the first time they had been in a church environment of this sort. Avosetta guitarist Ben commented “it was different to what I expected, it was much better!”

Avosetta played to a diverse and responsive crowd. “There is usually something of a mosh pit in church on Sunday nights and this night was no different!” Owen commented “It was great to see how the young people in church really got behind the band. Everyone had a great time”

Tommy-as-JonnyEarlier that day, Tommy Winn (pictured right as Johnny Cash), who runs Norfolk based Entertainment Agency Music and Events, performed songs by Johnny Cash in the daytime services. Tommy, a regular attender at Proclaimers Church, has performed his Johnny Cash Tribute show for a variety of audiences including a full house at Lowestoft’s Seagull Theatre earlier this year.

The series continues this weekend with messages inspired by Blues (daytime) and Punk (evening) before concluding on November 8, where singing at sporting events will provided the inspiration. Before a Sunday night finale that somehow combines Sport and High School Musical.

Proclaimers meets at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Boundary Road at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 7pm.

Wow, this sounds fun. I love Johnny Cash and I love Jesus, what a comboination!
I hope and pray that the innovative messages that are being brought help people connect with God and see lives changed. Praise God
