Help offered for Norfolk community projects
 The Norfolk Probation office is able to offer assistance with many projects within the community through the Community Payback scheme where offenders undertake unpaid work as part of reparative justice in action.
Unpaid Work Orders are available to offenders whose crime is not serious enough to warrant immediate imprisonment. Offenders can get between 40 to 300 hours of Unpaid Work (UW).
Mark Young, a placement supervisor on the scheme says, “Our work not only punishes offenders for their crime, it also aids offender rehabilitation by teaching social and work-based skills. Unpaid work is a disciplined activity, a loss of liberty, which aims to set clear boundaries for acceptable behaviour.
We accept requests from local organisations and endeavour to allocate our resources fairly amongst local community projects. This work can only be achieved in partnership with local Placement Providers.”
The Community Payback scheme aims to enhance the public image of UW and highlight its value to the community. Norfolk Probation are seeking to establish links with local organisations and to help build a stronger local community with an element of crime prevention.
The offenders are assessed for their suitability and the risk they pose to themselves and others before they are considered for UW.
Work that UW will not undertake:
- Any work that would take away paid employment
- Work for profitable organisations
- Work that cannot accommodate at least 8 offenders
- Work that cannot last more than 3 days
- Work that does not meet the criteria of the Unpaid Work Unit
