Holy Trinity cup final treble in Christian League
By Keith Morris
It was a football cup treble for Holy Trinity youth teams on Norfolk Christian Youth League Cup Finals day on Saturday May 8 at Easton College.
Holy Trinity teams swept the board at Under 12, U14 and U16 levels picking up all three winners’ trophies against enthusiastic and committed opponents in front of a crowd of around 100 on the 3G seven-a-side artificial pitches.
First up was the U14 cup final when a tight opening ten minutes against St John’s was blown apart by two wonderful strikes from far out by Trinity’s James Whitlock and Will Gibb. At half-time, and 2-0 down, there was still a way back for the smaller but committed St John’s team.
But Trinity’s strong passing game produced a third for Ed Pearce early in the second half followed by the killer blow with a cruel deflected shot from Elliot Lake. St John’s lost some heart as Trinity sprinted away with a further four goals leaving Elliot Lake with two and Ben Kidd with a hat-trick for an emphatic 8-0 final scoreline.
The U12 final pitted a skilful Holy Trinity side against a smaller but enthusiastic Sheringham Baptist team. A close contest was opened up when Steven Kidd scored for Trinity, followed quite quickly by a second from Connor Woods for a 2-0 halt-time lead.
Sheringham gave it everything in the second half, at one time making five simultaneous substitutions. But their diminutive keeper Oliver Ward made two fantastic top corner saves to keeper his team in the contest. Although Sheringham never gave up, Trinity remained in command until the final whistle.
The last game was the U16 final in which Holy Trinity were by this time going for the treble against a very committed Eaton Eagles side. Both teams boasted a handful of six-footers and the game was a battle of strength and passion.
Trinity pressed hard throughout and Eaton played on the breakaway but neither side could break the deadlock and the game moved goalless into extra time.
Just four minutes from penalties, Trinity’s greater ambition finally produced a goal from Raphael Gure who beat a defender to put a hard low shot into the bottom corner. Eaton responded but could not force an equaliser and Trinity saw out the last few minutes for a deserved win and the treble achieved.
