NCBC secure football double as UEA win cup

Reports by Helen Baldry and Robert Varley

ShieldActionNCBCStalham430NCBC completed a Norfolk Christian Football League double on the same day as Chelsea while the Bishop’s Cup went to league runners-up UEA Rovers.

On a day of cup final action at Trafford Park, Wroxham, on Saturday May 15, Norwich Central Baptist Church (NCBC) took on Stalham Baptist in the Wroxham Road Shield a week after they had secured the League title with a 4-1 win over the same opponents.

BishopCupAction450NCBC had a shot just wide of goal after 13 minutes and this was followed by a goal from Duncan White for NCBC after 25 minutes. Stalham fought back with a close header from a free kick minutes later but NCBC dominated first half possession.

Stalham fought back in the second half and there was an excellent cross from Stalham and the ball crossed the face of the goal twice but Stalham could not score.

BishopCupActionTinoNCBC also had some shots on goal, saved by Stalham's keeper and NCBC's striker chipped the ball over the keeper but hit the post in an exciting second half which ended with a final score of 1-0.

In the afternoon, the prestigious Bishop Maurice Wood’s Cup Final was contested between favourites UEA Rovers and Heartsease Churches.

In an exciting game, UEA took control through goals from Freddie Magee, Joe Head and John Sykes.

They did not let Heartsease back into the game and were heading for a comfortable win when the red mist descended after a poor 85th minute challenge by a UEA player.

A Heartsease player retaliated and a melee ensued with punches being thrown. Three Heartsease players were sent off and one UEA player. A really sad end to an otherwise great day.
