Christian solicitor offers Norfolk-based services
Norfolk Christian solicitor Philip Hook (right) is offering his professional services to the local faith-based community, among others, in areas of expertise including residential and commercial conveyancing, will writing and probate.
Norwich-based Philip has run his own sole practitioner solicitor business for the last 28 years, building up a loyal client base over that time. Although he hasclients in Europe, the United States and the Caribbean, as well as throughout the rest of the country, most of Philip’s clients are Norfolk-based.
“People need lawyers to help them accomplish or complete things at various points in their lives,” said Philip. “Whether that be moving house, writing a will, helping with a bereavement, setting up a trust or a new business venture maybe.
“At that time they want somebody who they know they can trust, somebody who takes their professional responsibilities seriously and who has an eye for the details that matter.
“As an independent solicitor, I can give clients my undivided attention and I set great store by my integrity and trustworthiness,” said Philip. “To quote a Bible verse, I believe that I am a labourer worthy of hire.”
A significant amount of Philip’s work involves property, whether acting for someone moving home, a developer laying out an estate or a company leasing an industrial unit. He regularly handles home sales and purchases from around £100,000 up to the £750,000 bracket. An average transaction will cost around £450 to £650, says Philip, who charges by the hour, so clients know exactly what work he has done. He offers discounted rates for first-time buyers. The transfer of property is often involved in the sale or purchase of a business which Philip regularly undertakes.
Will writing and probate - dealing with estate administration following a bereavement – is also an area of expertise for Philip. The cost of a straight-forward will is £150 or £275 for mirror wills for a married couple, for example. Another area of expertise is the making of Lasting Powers of Attorney and administering the affairs of those who no longer are able to do so themselves.
Philip has worked as a solicitor with one or two local practices, but 28 years ago took the then innovative decision to go it alone and base his work from home.
Today, his clients can reap the rewards of this modern way of working with Philip being able to offer a dedicated personal service and competitive rates for his work. Clients also benefit from the convenience and flexibility of meeting Philip in their own home or office at a time to suit them, including evenings and weekends.
“My clients find that they can be more relaxed at home and the flexibility is important to them,” said Philip.
Philip is a practising Roman Catholic who worships at several local churches including St John’s Cathedral, Our Lady in Thorpe St Andrew, St Mark’s in Lakenham and St George’s on Sprowston Road.
“By upbringing a Catholic, my faith was brought to life on an Alpha course,” said Philip. “Both my sense of spirituality and a desire to help others have for a long time been very important to me. With the reawakening of my faith has come a greater awareness of the one Christian family, regardless of denomination.”
Philip is a former trustee of Christian charity Dreams & Visions and also a past chairman of governors of the faith-based Notre Dame preparatory school in Norwich.
“At important moments in their lives, Christians often would like to work with somebody who understands the way they approach life and their values. I believe that I can offer that,” he says.
Philip has an unusual claim to fame as, at the age of 21, he was made a Freeman of the City of Norwich, a hereditary title derived from his ancestors’ work as city taylors. “It means that in times past, if it came to the crunch, I would be entitled to be hung with a silken thread,” said Philip.
