Bible stories brought alive in Norfolk schools

OpenTheBook2011: A project which aims to make sure that every primary school child in Norfolk hears the story of the Bible is offering the opportunity for local Christians to take part.

Open the Book is a national Christian initiative where a team of volunteers from local churches go into school assemblies to tell Bible stories.

There are currently 26 Open the Book teams registered in the diocese of Norwich and a further training session is happening at Rockland All Saints on 20th January.

Open the Book provides a valuable link between churches and the community. The assemblies are very popular with the children. They know what the format is and they get the opportunity to participate. The idea is that the stories make a visual impact as well as being heard. This leads to a great deal of fun for the teams and the children and they remember the stories.

The stories are based on the Lion Storyteller Bible by Bob Hartman, a Bible story book recommended for use in RE in primary schools across Norfolk and Suffolk. The stories last about 8-10 minutes and give a 'snapshot' of the Bible from Genesis to Acts. There is now material for a 3 year programme.

Many stories use high impact visual aids and simple drama. Props and costumes are made locally, often by other church members, and in some areas stored centrally and shared by several teams.
