Jess puts sport and fitness on YMCA agenda

Sport, fitness and healthy eating are high on the agenda of new YMCA Norfolk Health and Well-being Development Worker Jess Tyson, who is looking to develop partnerships with local churches, schools and other organizations.
JessTysonSports400Jess, who studied ‘Sport in the Community’ at Durham University and has worked as the Sport and Physical Activity Development Officer at Norwich City Council, aims to support churches, schools and other community groups to development health and well-being activities.

YMCA Norfolk is committed to transforming communities so that young people can belong, contribute and thrive. As part of that vision Jess wants to encourage those small changes that can have a big impact on health, whether it is exercise, nutrition or becoming a volunteer.

Jess said: “I am looking to develop key partnerships in Norwich and Norfolk so that a high quality service can be delivered to meet the needs of the local community. Nationally, the YMCA has done fantastic work in Health and Well-being such as providing outdoor adventure camps and running fitness centres.

“The YMCA is the largest voluntary sector provider of Health and Well-being in the country and I hope that YMCA Norfolk can build on this to develop exciting possibilities and new opportunities such as holiday programmes, after-school clubs, tournaments and raising awareness of health and nutrition issues. I would really welcome people getting in touch with me to see how we could work together.”

Jess is herself a keen sportswoman playing tennis for Norfolk, as well as informal rowing and football and enjoying swimming, dancing and gymnastics. She also spent three months hiking across rough terrain in New Zealand with Christian charity Operation Mobilisation. Jess enjoys healthy cooking and is a big fan of Jamie Oliver’s campaigns to transform school dinners.

Jess Tyson is based at the YMCA’s sports centre in Trowse, where it already offers a large indoor sports hall with four badminton courts, facilities for 5-a-side football and ample space for other activities as well as an outdoor Astroturf pitches and changing rooms.

YMCA Norfolk is also able to provide a reliable, high quality and good value coaching service for schools and the community. All coaches hold relevant sport qualifications are CRB checked, first aid trained and have attended child protection and safeguarding workshops.
