Churches urged - get on Olympic starting blocks
The London Olympics in 2012 presents a great opportunity for churches across Norfolk. Archdeacon of Norwich, the Ven Jan McFarlane, urges them to get out of the starting blocks now.
“We missed a trick there,” is the one thing we don’t want our churches to be saying at the conclusion of the Olympics!
The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London will provide a once in a life time opportunity for churches to engage with an event of major significance and celebration in the life of our nation.
Whether you rejoiced or resented London winning the bid, the Games will take place in the summer of 2012! The question is whether we engage creatively with this national event or let the opportunity pass us by.
More than Gold is an ecumenical organization which has experience and resources to offer the churches, so that we can be prepared for the Olympics. Please do take a moment to look at their website – www.morethangold.org.uk – which contains all you need to help your church make the most of this opportunity for outreach and service to our local communities.
There are so many ways in which we can be involved: How about organizing a Children’s Holiday Club on an Olympic theme? Hosting a local Olympic party in your neighbourhood? What about a sports quiz evening with guest speaker? Could your church help host the families of athletes – especially those who couldn’t afford London B&B prices? The More than Gold website gives more information, and practical resources, in all these areas and more.
We know that the Olympic Torch will be coming to Norwich on 4 July 2012 – and travelling through Norfolk. Is your church on the route? Will your church be open to offer hospitality to the crowds along the route? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-13413890
Further resources and ideas will be available on the Diocesan website – www.norwich.anglican.org – as the Games draw nearer. But it’s never too early to start planning!
