Norwich Christian clubs inspire young people

Equip1A Christian youth project has been holding successful holiday clubs in Norwich for the last year on a variety of themes including love and science. The next club revolves around sport and will take place in July.

Each 'Equip' holiday club, run by ENYP, focuses on a different theme, has encouraged children to join together for fun, friendship, activity and learning and has led to the growth of the club which now takes place every school holiday.

Kate Doran-Smith, Youth Worker for ENYP and co-organiser, said, “The success of Equip over the last twelve months is largely due to the relationships with the community and local families. When you get to know the kids it is easier to know what they would enjoy doing”. The Equip holiday activities have included themes such as; love, science, Easter, nativity, day and night, spring and summer.

Equip3The Equip in May half term was based around the theme of science which included messy experiments, tricky team trials and the opportunity to present invention ideas to an Equip Dragon’s Den panel.

Bethany (aged 10) says “Equip is really fun, exciting, and everyone always has a really good time”. Michelle a local mum of two, who has a daughter who attends Equip says “I think that Equip is great, something for my daughter to look forward to in the school holidays, and also good for her to get together with some of her friends that she might not normally see in the holidays”.

ENYP also supported the Celebrate weekend by running an Equip club in partnership with St Peter Mancroft Church

Danny Doran-Smith, ENYP Project Director said, “We were pleased to work alongside St Peter Mancroft Church in supporting the Celebrate event which enabled us to reach new families in the city area and offer their children some creative and fun activities for the afternoon”.

This summer, ENYP will be supported by YMCA Health and Wellbeing Worker Jessica Tyson to deliver a ‘sport’ based Equip holiday club. Ellie Payne, ENYP Youth Worker who is heading up the activity this summer, said, “Since Equip holiday clubs started over a year ago, we have done many different themes and activities, and its popularity has really grown within the local community. It’s great to be joining together and doing more ‘sporty’ activities this summer”.

Jess Tyson comments “YMCA Norfolk are pleased to partner with ENYP to bring fun sport activities to young people in the east of Norwich. Equip this summer will be a celebration of the Olympics as we look forward to London 2012. We want to inspire young people to get active and take part in sport whilst also having great fun with friends”.
