Years of service on the Norwich soup run
 Last week one of the organisers of the Norwich Soup Run retired from his role. Brian Bassingthwaighte organised the service - which serves the homeless of Norwich with food and hot drinks - for many years.
Each and every night of the year at 10pm the ‘Soup Run’, which began in the 1980’s and is operated by Norwich Citadel of The Salvation Army meets at the charity stall on Gentlemen’s Walk. The aim is to provide sandwiches, cake and hot drinks to those who are homeless or live on the streets.
This is generally regarded as a remarkable effort of co-operation amongst Christians of all denominations and others who are not formally connected to any church and it is regarded by some as the City’s most successful ecumenical venture.
On Sunday 11 September Envoy Brian Bassingthwaighte who organised the Soup Run for many years, retired at a special morning Service held at the Norwich Citadel.
Many of the Soup Run volunteers attended and tribute was paid to the many hours that Brian put into this ministry. Margaret his wife and Pamela his sister were also recognised for the support that they have given to him.
Such a mammoth activity can only exist with the help and assistance of a sizable team of volunteers to serve the many who utilise this service.
