Quakers make peace a way of life in Norwich

NorwichQuakersstall Peace CampQuakers in Norwich will be speaking up during the fifth national Quaker Week, 1 - 11 October, about making peace a way of life.

The theme for National Quaker Week from is 'Make Peace a Way of Life' Quakers are involved in peace and reconciliation work in conflict areas around the world, active in Prison reform, promoting environmental and sustainability concerns, working for justice and equality; in fact working to be living witnesses to our shared beliefs in Peace, Truth, Equality and Simplicity.

In Norwich, throughout the week, Quakers are sharing ways they put their beliefs into action not just for a week or a month but in their whole future lives.

Lesley Grahame, City Councillor for Thorpe Hamlet, is a Quaker who continually puts her beliefs into action in all aspects of her life and joins another Quaker Councillor, Rupert Read, on the City Council representing the Green Party. Lesley is well known for her enthusiastic support of the many peace and community groups in Norwich and work with Quakers locally and nationally.

As Lesley says "living what I believe as a part of my everyday life is exactly what makes me part of a Quaker community." And you'll find other Norwich Quakers active in most of these groups too.

Making peace a way of life is an important part of the quaker tradition. During the First and Second World Wars many Friends served in the Friends Ambulance Unit, working in the front line to help war casualities, both during and after hostilities ceased. And today Friends are playing their part as advisers to the UN in New York and Geneva and working for peace in other areas of the world. In Norwich, Quakers are active in the Norwich International Youth Project helping young refugees living in our City, who meet each week at the Friends Meeting House.
