Outreach bus, celebration and wireless church

SplagLogo250Latest Norfolk Christian news includes a new youth outreach bus, 60 years of sermons and approval of an innovative church broadband project.
The donation of a new youth outreach bus has been celebrated by a Christian youth charity in Mid Norfolk to help provide refuge and advice in areas where help is most needed.

The converted single-decker was formally commissioned during a special service by charity Splag at the Breckland Resource Base on London Road in Dereham. The bus came from Stagecoast East and will be used by youth pastors Lyn Milns and Chris Olley, who have been involved in youth outreach work in the town since 2002.

A special service has been held in Norwich to mark a canon’s 60 years of ordained ministry. Canon John Room, a former Thetford mayor and Breckland district council leader, led a service at St Mary Magdalene’s Church, in Silver Road, Sprowston, as the congregation celebrated his unusual milestone.

It was the first time he had led a service for 10 years as the church’s Rev Marc Palmer stepped aside to let him return to the lectern. He actually retired from full-time ministry in 1989 but has retained permission from the Bishop to lead services and preach across the diocese ever since, although had not done so for a decade. Around 80 people took to the church’s pews to hear his sermon.

A judge has ruled that a project to transmit wireless broadband from Norfolk’s church towers can go ahead, despite the health concerns of objectors. Judge Paul Downes oversaw a consistory court hearing on Monday September 26, to hear a disputed “faculty application” made by the parish of Postwick, outside Norwich.

The village’s church is the first to apply to install a wi-fi transmitter under the Wispire project, a joint venture by the Diocese of Norwich and service provider FreeClix to beam high-speed internet into surrounding homes and businesses.
