Greed is ruining our earth
Norwich vicar Revd Philip Young's message for One World Week 23 - 30 October is that greed is ruining our earth... but it doesn't have to be that way.
Jesus, as he was crucified, cried, ‘Father forgive them as they know not what they do.’
Greed is ruining our earth. Nature is being crucified. Every day we are losing species and destabilising the planet. Our creed of continuing economic expansion is madness in a world, which has limited resources. Nature is being crucified because of human ignorance and greed, and Jesus cries out, once again, ‘Father forgive them as they know not what they do.’
We cannot remain in our state of ignorance and greediness if we are to continue life on earth. It is time to wake up and realise that we are all one family living together on this one earth. Either we learn to live together as brothers and sisters, and learn to look after each other and our home planet, or we will all perish together, as we kill off our life support system.
The time has come to realise that war and fighting one another is too environmentally expensive. Our only option is to put all our valuable resources into loving and caring for one another and our planet.
The alarm bells are ringing ever louder on our planet and the time for urgent action is now. Our inaction over past decades since the 1960s when we were becoming more aware of the damage we were inflicting on our environment cannot be undone. We might have made it easier for ourselves had we acted earlier, but this now makes our actions all the more important and necessary.
The news is not all bad, however, as nature is on our side if we only will work with her. Nature knows all about death and resurrection. The humble seed dies but, as it dies, it can grow and produce much fruit.
There are many things, which human beings need to put to death. War, ignorance, greed and the creed of endless economic expansion must be buried and put to death. Peace, knowledge, equality of all beings, and the creed of sustainable living must be brought alive.
To choose to work with nature can be looked upon as an adventurous challenge. To love one another and to love our planet will bring us together as one human family.
Let us renew the earth and one another as we seek a vision of a green and pleasant future. Let us act together now to bring healing to each other and our planet.
