Packed church welcomes Geoff and Linda to Norwich
The Induction of the Revd Geoff Hewitt to the Norwich Area URCs took place on Friday 18 th November at Princes Street URC. The church was full, with members from the Norwich Area United Reformed Churches being joined by family and friends of Geoff and Linda. How good it was to see that so many of our ecumenical friends also came to share in the celebration together with civil dignitaries.
URC Eastern Synod Moderator Revd Paul Whittle was the presiding minister; Revd Nigel Uden - a friend of Geoff's from a past ministry - delivered the sermon; and our team ministers - Alison, Matt and Liz - led the prayers. However, everyone had the opportunity to take part, as both Geoff and members of the congregation made their promises as part of the Induction Service.
Right at the beginning of the service we were reminded that this was a joyful occasion and this was reinforced by the resounding rendition of all the hymns (how much better the singing sounds with a full church!).
Following the Induction, Geoff was welcomed with the Right Hand of Fellowship by representatives from all the Norwich Area churches, the Sheriff of Norwich, the Lord Mayor and representatives of our ecumenical friends. The service ended with Geoff being presented with a bible and Linda with flowers.
Of course, there were refreshments to round off the evening (what is a URC event without refreshments?). The Induction Service was indeed a truly joyful occasion and we are delighted to welcome Geoff to the team. We hope that he and Linda will soon feel “at home” in Norwich and that they will enjoy discovering all that Norfolk has to offer. We look forward to getting to know them within our fellowship.
