Bells ring out at Norwich Christian centre
For the first time in at least 38 years, bells are chiming again at St Michael-at-Plea church, home of the Norwich Christian Resource Centre after a whimsical idea at a Lent course two years ago turned into reality this week.
Centre manager Steve Foyster explains what happened. “During an ecumenical 2009 Lent study course held in the Forget-me-not-Cafe, the participants were discussing outward signs of faith such as Moslems being called to prayer from minarets.
“The sounds of church bells as an outward sign of the Christian faith was also raised. I suggested rather wildly that it would be really great if we could get a bell ringing again at St Michael-at-Plea, given that this couldn't have happened for at least 38 years, the church being deconsecrated in 1973.”
Some weeks later, Sheila Spreadbury one of the cafe volunteers, a Norwich bellringer and member of the Lent group informed Steve that she had found a redundant bell in a city centre church. A friend and fellow bellringer, Neil Thomas, would be willing to hang it for free!
During the last month the redundant bell from St John de Sepulchre winched into the tower at St Michael-at-Plea, by Neil and Sheila's son, John Spreadbury.
Rehung and linked electronically to the church's clock mechanism, the bell will chime the hour between 9am and 6pm, so remember listen out for it the next time you approach Norwich Christian Resource Centre!
