Norwich Christian youth project reaches out
A Christian youth project in Norwich has recently secured funding to start a new mentoring initiative to help young people in the city to reach their potential.
The Reach Project is part of ENYP (East Norwich Youth Project), and will run from St Matthew’s Church, Telegraph Lane West, Thorpe Hamlet, from 3:45 – 5:15pm on alternate Thursdays.
Some of the wards within the East of Norwich are within the most 10% deprived in England, young people are often living in poverty and deprivation lacking in motivation, self-esteem and receive little encouragement.
The project will provide training, education and mentoring by providing an internet café for young people to drop in and get support with homework, coursework, writing a CV or just an infomral chat with one of the team. Structured training sessions that are relevant to young people will also be offered, aiming to equip them with the skills they need.
Danny Doran-Smith, Director of ENYP said, "Our experience of working with young people has shown there can be significant gaps in supporting them to access the best training or employment opportunities that are geared towards their interests. This is more noticeable in the deprived communities where young people also lack aspirations for their future.
"We have had a number of volunteers come forward from local churches to help impart their skills and expertise. These include teachers, special needs teachers, social workers, beauticians and university lecturers."
