Walk set to reveal Norwich church history
A guided history walk, to celebrate the diverse expressions of Christianity in Norwich, is set to be one of the new elements of the popular Celebrate Norwich and Norfolk event in June, with a limited number of tickets now available.
The walk, which will be led by church historian Dr Nicholas Groves (author of the best-selling The Medieval Churches of the City of Norwich and pictured above) will include many of the astonishing variety of places of Christian worship within the city centre - mediaeval churches, monastic houses, dissenting chapels and others.
Many are still standing, some still in use, others converted for secular uses, while yet others have long vanished. Summaries of the often inter-connected histories of the various sites and their place in the religious and secular history of Norwich will be given along the way, but, owing to the constraints of time, it will not be possible to visit the interiors of any of the buildings.
The walk is designed to take about two-and-a-half hours, including a refeshments break of 30 minutes half-way round (included in the cost).
So if you have ever wondered why there are two Baptist chapels on St Mary's Plain, what the connection between the Greek Orthodox and the Christian Scientists is, or where the Tabernacle stood, then come along to find out!
The walk will be held on Saturday June 9 and start from in front of the Forum, where the Celebrate event will be taking place. It will begin at 2pm and last until 4.30pm.
Tickets, at £10 each, including a map, are now available to book online with only a limited number available, so book now to avoid disappointment.
