Norwich MP Simon Wright helps collect food

evenews1Norwich South MP Simon Wright helped Norwich foodbank volunteers with a collection at the Waitrose supermarket in Eaton on February 4.

Simon said: “I’m pleased to be able to help the Norwich Foodbank and raise awareness of the number of families in Norwich in or close to poverty who need our help. By adding an extra item of food from the Foodbank’s list, shoppers can really make a difference for families or individuals in the Norwich area who are in crisis.”

More than 700kg of food was collected at the Waitrose store in Eaton, which will now be packed into food boxes to be given to local people in times of crisis.

Volunteers from the charity were collecting items from shoppers, between 10am and 3pm, and project manager Grant Habershon was thrilled with the response they received. He said: “The supermarket collection day was a great success thanks to the wonderful staff and shoppers at Waitrose and our brilliant volunteers, whose time, enthusiasm and energy made the collection run smoothly.

“On the day we collected a tremendous 702kg. Waitrose shoppers responded tremendously and as a great number were very keen to donate food on a regular basis, we are now looking for a permanent collection point in the Eaton area.”

The next supermarket collection being held by the charity is at Morrisons on Riverside, Norwich, on Friday, March 16
