Cromer mayors set to receive spiritual support
Those stepping into the historic role of Mayor of Cromer could soon be supported by a vicar, priest or minister under a new resolution recently approved by the town council’s strategy committee.
The new spiritual advisor - chosen from the civic leader’s local place of worship - would “offer guidance to the mayor”, help organise and lead the civic service, and become reliant upon to work with the “people of the parish in times of need or disaster”.
The proposal was accepted by the full council at the end of January, and was added to the Standing Orders, which are reviewed annually.
The current mayor, Greg Hayman, also put forward other proposals to shake up and modernise the historic title, including alternating between the sexes, and limiting the number of times a mayor can serve.
Julie Chance, Cromer’s Town Clerk, said: “We review our Standing Orders on an annual basis and Members are entitled to put forward resolutions for consideration. It will be up to the Mayor, with the support of the other Members, to decide how to implement the proposal. All faiths will, of course, continue to be welcomed at the annual civic service."
