Aid initiative is launched in city

ChristianAidActJustlyKidsChristian Aid's Act Justly initiative has been launched in Norwich following on from the success of Norwich's Make Poverty History event.

The initiative was presented to church leaders at St Luke's Church, Norwich, On October 18 chaired by John Betts, chair of Transforming Norwich, and Roger Allen, head of the New Churches team for Christian Aid and the inspiration behind the course.

Act Justly is a set of six sessions for cell and small groups that explore how God calls people to live in an unjust world. It looks at issues such as HIV/Aids, cancelling debt, shopping ethically and trade justice. The course is accompanied by a video narrated by Steve Chalke.

"The Act Justly appeal is a way for the whole church to respond to God's call, through teaching, prayer and giving, particularly to the work of Christian Aid's partner ACET in Uganda," said Christian Aid youth and new churches liaison officer for the region, Jenny Skivington.

Roger Allen, who studied at the University of East Anglia and worshipped at Kings Community Church before moving to Christian Aid, said: “Having lived in Zambia, my life can never be the same again. In the lottery of life I just happened to be born in the UK. My best friend was born in Zambia. One child in five in that country dies by the age of five and across the world a child dies from poverty every five seconds. There are 11 million orphans now in sub-Saharan Africa due largely to HIV/Aids.

“The purpose of Act Justly is to build relation ships, raise awareness of global injustice and the Biblical mandate for Christians to act justly from Micah 6 verse 8.”
