Olympic Games have set our hearts on fire

Olympics100m450Our hearts have been set on fire by the amazing success of Team GB during the heady days of the London 2012 Olympic Games says Philip Young, vicar at St Thomas' Church, Heigham, Norwich.

Our dreams of a golden London 2012 Olympic Games have been fulfilled and exceeded by the wonderful success of our dedicated athletes.

Years of hard work and training have come to fruition in London 2012. Us Brits are rightly proud of the outstanding achievements of Team GB.

Is there a way that this great success can spill over and help us all? As we settle back into normality is there a way that we can all ‘Go for Gold’? Can we get inside the mindset of someone who strives for Olympic gold and can that inspire our life journey?

All of us have dreams. All of us have great potential. God wants us to Go for Gold. How exciting it is that God makes us all different and all unique. What are your dreams and ideals? What is it that makes your heart beat more quickly? What are your gifts that God wants you to develop?

PhilipYoung300It is wonderful that athletes work for and achieve Gold, but they are, as Paul writes to the Corinthians, ‘doing it to receive a perishable garland, but we an imperishable one’ (1 Corinthians 9.25). The Gold that we work towards is to reach our full potential as God’s creatures. The crown that we receive is life in all its fullness.

Physical achievement in sport is impressive, but the physical passes. Bodies get weaker and older and then we die. How much more important and challenging it is to work on achieving our spiritual potential as God’s sons and daughters?

Just think of all the effort and resources that athletes put into achieving gold. How wonderful it would be if we could put lots of energy and effort into achieving spiritual gold.

Will you let God’s Spirit loose in your life and grow up into your full potential as God’s child? Each of us need to develop our gifts and then offer them for the healing and wholeness of others.

What a great calling.

Will you follow the path?

Will you follow your dreams?

Will you ‘Go for Gold’?
