Norwich churches united in worship

UnityCandlesWebChristians from scores of churches across Norwich gathered together at a United Churches Service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
 
Organised by Transforming Norwich (Churches Together in Greater Norwich) the service took place at Mount Zion Family Life Centre on Heartsease Lane on January 23. on Heartsease Lane on January 23.
 
The service worship was led by the Family Life Centre band and included some Indian music from the Kerala Catholic group and the Christ Church choir.
 
A number of cross-church initiatives were outlined including Sunday by Naomi Tuma, Prayer without Ceasing by Rev Nigel Fox, Norwich Besom by Hilary Beach, Norwich-Malawi links by John Dubbey, Reality by Katie McInnes, and Friends in Ministry by Trevor Pimlott.
 
The main speaker was Roger Allen head of New Churches at Christian Aid who introduced Act Justly 2 - the theme for the Transforming Norwich Lent course which starts on March 1.
 
Fr James Walsh read the Gospel while John Betts, chair of transforming Norwich closed the evening after which everyone had the chance to light candles to demonstrate their commitment to various areas of Norwich and across the world.
 
Following on from the service, Transforming Norwich will present Act Justly 2, a six-week course with videos and guest speakers, beginning 1 March.
 
Clare Elkins, pastor of New Hope Christian Fellowship in south Norwich, ran Act Justly 2 in the autumn. She says:
 
“This course is the most incredibly challenging thing we’ve done for ages. If you take it seriously, it is life-changing.”
 
Act Justly 2 will run at St Luke's church centre, Aylsham Road, at 7.30pm, looking at Faith and Action (1 March), Serving Jesus (8 March), Shopping Ethically (15 March), Cancelling Debts (22 March), Trade Justice (29 March) and Living to Please God (5 April). For more details, call 01603 620051.
