Awesome rock set for Norwich church
A landmark church in Norwich city centre will rock to the sound of guitar music and smoke machines at an innovative new monthly service Awesome in the City, thanks to a partnership between two churches with different styles.
Ancient and contemporary will meet together in a powerful way when Proclaimers Church brings its dynamic music and compelling message to St Peter Mancroft's hallowed stones on January 28 at 6pm. The first service will include internationally acclaimed TV presenter, producer, author, and social commentator Mal Fletcher.
Tom Rawls, Senior Minister of Proclaimers Church, which attracts up to 400 people to its meetings at Norwich’s Ramada Jarvis Hotel, and the Reverend Peter Nokes, of 600-year-old Anglican St Peter Mancroft, see Awesome in the City as a unique opportunity to reach Norwich with a relevant message for today.
Tom Rawls said: "St Peter Mancroft is a magnificent building with a respected history of sharing the message of Christ in the heart of the city. What we want to do is to reach a new generation who may think church is boring and not particularly relevant.
“Awesome in the City will communicate the message of Christ through the contemporary and exciting music. The atmosphere will be pumping with great music and a relevant, challenging message.”
Reverend Peter Nokes agrees. He notes that his church overlooks a "skateboarder's paradise" and shares Tom's belief that their common goal is to connect with as many people as they can, especially with those who fall outside of traditional church member profiles. Awesome in the City is one way to reach out to a generation who might not realise that today's church is once again a cool and impressive place to be.
The Awesome band will combine innovative lighting, smoke machines, and multimedia with its fresh, rock-based sound to lead the evening's event.
Mal Fletcher, will speak at the exciting inaugural event. His TV programme 'Edges™ with Mal Fletcher' is viewed in over 210 countries, and promises to deliver a challenging message with a unique global perspective.
Awesome in the City is a free event and open to all ages. The music will be loud though!
