John Drake named as Sheriff of Norwich

JohnDrakeWebJohn Drake, Chief Executive of YMCA Norfolk, has been named as Norwich’s Sheriff Designate, at a meeting of the full City Council in City Hall on March 7, 2006.

John said he was delighted to be given the opportunity to hold such a prestigious position in Norwich, representing the people and businesses of the City at a wide range of events.
"I am absolutely honoured to be entrusted with this privilege and I will endeavour to fulfil the responsibilites of this office,” said John. “I thank the Council for their recognition of the 150 years service rendered by the YMCA across Norfolk."

Councillor Ian Couzens, Leader of Norwich City Council, said: "I am extremely pleased that John Drake is going to be Sheriff. John has worked tirelessly on behalf of our city and it is entirely fitting that he should be offered this appointment".

Councillor Steve Morphew, Leader of the Labour Group commented: "The civic team for next year continues the tradition of honouring people who have done proud service to the city and I am pleased to support Councillor Felicity Hartley as Lord Mayor and John. They will make a good team and they will do a good job for Norwich."

The Lord Mayor designate and Sheriff designate took up their roles on 23 May for the year 2006/07.
Norwich is one of only 15 UK towns and cities to appoint a Sheriff. The appointment is made annually. Members of the majority political group on the Council make the decision as to who is to become Sheriff. The role is honorary and apolitical
