Football cup final fever in Christian league

WitardVineyardFootball0001With World Cup fever reaching a peak, the Norfolk Christian Football League and its Youth League are staging their own cup finals over the next two weekends.

The Bishop’s Cup Final will be staged at Mulbarton United’s Mulberry Park in the village just south of Norwich on Saturday May 6 starting at 1.30pm and will feature Norwich Central Baptist against Stalham Baptist.

The trophy will be presented by the current Bishop of Norwich, Right Rev Graham James, the first time this has happened for a number of years.

NCBC knocked out two of the favourites for the competition Mount Zion and Holy Trinity in previous rounds, while Stalham knocked out UEA and reached the final with a last-minute extra time goal in a titanic semi-final against Norwich Vineyard.

Earlier in the day, UEA will battle it out with Witard Road in the Wroxham Road Memorial Shield final at the same venue from 10.30am. The trophy was renamed this year after the Wroxham Road team which graced the league over the past decade or so winning a number of league titles. The team retired from the league at the end of last season.

UEAStalhamFootballWebLeague chairman Pete Loughborough said: “We are very pleased that the Bishop of Norwich has agreed to present the cup. All spectators are warmly welcomed to both the games and we are hoping for a sizeable crowd. Admission is free.”
