Norwich event explores church gender issues

The Diocese of Norwich is running a day conference to help us consider issues of inclusion of women and transgender people in the Church, while exploring issue of gender and its implications for Christian communities.

How 'Gender Aware' is your church will by run with Rev Canon Rosie Harper and Rev Dr Christina Beardsley at St Matthew, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich on Saturday October 8.

Diocese Lay Development Officer and conference organizer, Rev Dr Paul Overend, said: “While in the Church of England women have recently been appointed bishops and otherwise offer leadership in senior posts, there is yet still much to be done to transform the church to respond creatively to the practical needs of women in ordained and lay ministry, and to draw from the insights of women and transgender people in our churches, so enabling our full equality as Christians. This day is an opportunity to reflect theologically on that task, and to seek God’s guidance and assistance.

“The day aims to consider the inclusion and equality of women in the church, the church's current attitude(s) to gender and to transgender people, to reflect on the relationship between spirituality/ theology and people's experience of gender, including transgender people's experience,” said Paul. “Also, to explore practical strategies for engagement with our churches, to change hearts and minds that we may all benefit from theological insights gained, and work towards an inclusive church.”

Speakers:
•    Rev Canon Rosie Harper is a member of Church of England General Synod, vicar of Great Missenden, chaplain to the Bishop of Buckingham.
•    Rev Dr Christina Beardsley is Head of Multi-faith Chaplaincy at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London, and is a member of Sibyls - A Christian Spirituality Group for Transgender People
