Psychologist saved from brink of despair
2006: Psychologist Dr Peter Whitlam was the main speaker at Norwich's monthly Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International dinner on Friday November 10 at the Quality Hotel in Bowthorpe.
Peter Whitlam left school at 15. He became estranged from his family, suffered from depression, took to drink, was in trouble with the Law, and attempted suicide.
He cried out to God and got an overwhelming sense of peace. He married Madeleine who was a Christian and she encouraged him back to school and he ended with a Doctorate in Psychology from Oxford.
Then came a brilliant career. Peter had his own consultancy and was earning megabucks. Inside, however, he was riddled with doubt, insecurity and guilt.
Then Madeleine persuaded him to go on an Alpha Course. This culminated in a dramatic conversion experience which brought the peace and assurance he longed for.
Peter now works helping people suffering from alcohol and drug misuse. "This is a powerful story of the power of God to turn a mess into a marvel," said FGBMFI Norwich branch president Michael Cant. " No one is beyond hope."
