Julian of Norwich Festival week programme 2024

The Julian of Norwich Festival week in May will include a sculpture workshop, book launch, the performance of a new play, and The Friends’ 40th anniversary Julian Lecture by former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

This year’s Julian Festival will run from Wednesday May 8 to Friday May 10 leading to the Julian Festival Day on Saturday May 11. The festival is organised by the Friends of Julian of Norwich and this year is the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Friends.

An interactive engagement with the Holy Mother Wisdom sculpture in the Julian Centre will be held on Ascension Day, Thursday. Led by the artist, Caroline Mackenzie the workshop will explore the sculpture’s links to Julian’s visions and include a contemplative liturgy.

Friday will include the launch of the paperback edition of Julian of Norwich and the Problem of Evil. Father Bruce Batstone, founder member of the Companions of Julian, and fellow Companion and author, Richard Norton discuss this issue as it arises from Richard's latest book.

CELL, a new play by Cindy Oswin, will be performed at Dragon Hall on Friday evening. This unique encounter with Julian of Norwich examines her life and writing in a spirit of inquiry, humour and hope.

The festival week culminates with The Friends’ 40th anniversary Julian Lecture at Norwich Cathedral by the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. The Saturday lecture will be followed by the chance for Q&A. Rowan Williams last delivered the Julian Lecture a decade ago and, on that occasion, the cathedral was so full people were sitting on the floor.
