Truckers' new chaplain is ready to roll
East Coast Truckers have appointed Rev Geoff Brendling from Taverham Evangelical Church near Norwich as their chaplin and a service for truckers has been set for April 15. Rev Vic Ready reports.
When you and I think of truckers we probably think of men and women painstakingly and frustratingly combating the roads of England and beyond, stopping every now and then at a transport café for refreshments. As a medical rep for many years, I rather felt that trucker and tractor drivers deliberately conspired to stop me reaching my appointments on time by slowing down and joining forces whenever I was on the road!
The truth is, of course, that truckers are the lifeblood of our society, almost everything we eat, drink, wear or consume in any way comes to us via transport. Their job is incredibly difficult, not to mention dangerous; these men and women are professionals and should be recognised for the important service they make to this nation.
The spiritual needs of truckers are something most of us do not consider. It is of course sometimes difficult for truckers to get to church as often as they would like due to work commitments. They often leave families at home who are concerned about their safety whilst on the road and are relieved to see them return safely at the end of their shift.
Because they are on the road so much, many who would like to come to church cannot do so and others who are not perhaps particularly religious would like to feel that they are prayerfully supported. With this in mind East Coast Truckers have appointed Rev. Geoff Brendling as their Chaplin. Geoff, a minister at Taverham Evangelical Church (TEC), spends the first Sunday of every month with the truckers offering spiritual support wherever he can.
On April 15, 6.30pm at Taverham Village Hall, TEC will be holding a Truckers Service for East Coast Truckers. The service itself will be to some extent a thanksgiving service for the work that they do, especially for their children’s charitable work. The other part will be devoted to meeting the spiritual needs of ECT as well as covenanting to continually pray for their safety on the roads.
If you are a trucker and would like to come we would love to see you, although it would be advisable to leave your truck at home to leave enough parking spaces for all who want to come!
