FUNDING NEWS
The Yapp Charitable Trust makes grants totalling £300k to about 100 small charities each year. Grants of up to £3,000 per year for up to three years are available for work with elderly people, children and young people, people with disabilities or mental health problems. The Lloyds TSB Foundation has published new guidelines and priorities for 2007. These include:
- The Community Open Programme (£7.7m for 2007), which aims to support local and underfunded charities that help disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in their community.
- The Community Priority Programme (£11.5m for 2007), which prioritses older people, those with learning disabilities, diverse minority communities and refugees and asylum seekers.
- The Collaborative Programme (ending in Dec. 2007), which provides support for charities working together: co-ordinating services; working more effectively through cross sector working; and mergers.

The Church Urban Fund (CUF) makes ‘Mustard Seed’ grants of up to £5000 to enable churches and faith-based projects to develop their ideas and especially to pilot local networking projects. The Njoya Foundation was set up in memory of a victim of the terrorist bombings of 7th July 2005. It makes grants of up to £500 to projects that promote academic achievement and young people's growth (especially those of African-Caribbean descent) through community-based personal development programmes. It is especially interested in funding projects teaching young people an awareness of business and finance. The next deadline is 12th May. The application form can be downloaded along with guidance notes from their website or you can email.
The Friends Provident Foundation funds projects that are addressing financial exclusion e.g. micro-credit schemes, with up to £200k over five years. It has two main programmes:
- The New Ideas programme provides ‘seed money’ for new services helping to reduce financial exclusion. Deadline 27th April.
- The Market Models programme is to help replicate projects successfully delivering solutions to financial exclusion. Deadline 4th May. The website includes details on how to apply or alternatively email or phone 01904 797 586.
The Victims Fund supports community-based services for victims of sexual offending. From a fund of £1.25m, grants can be made for up £50k to continue developing the capacity and stability of existing support services. The deadline is 16th April. TRAINING AND EVENT NEWS

Kingdom Come is a social action conference being run by New Frontiers International in Birmingham on April 28th. The day aims to inspire, equip and network those involved in this area of work and costs £10. For more information email Nick Priggis or phone 01273 234532.
Setting People Free is the 5th Urban Congress of Jesus in the City being held in Bristol 14-18 June with guest speaker Jim Wallis. The aim is for Christians to be inspired to work for change in their communities. The basic congress fee is £80 for online booking – there are various concessions available. A workshop on different fundraising techniques and approaches, Fundraising Out of the Box, is being held at the Friends Meeting House, Bolton, on 24th April by Company Solutions. The Shaftesbury Society is hosting a free training day, 'Speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves’ on 16 May at St. Clements Church in Bradford from 10:15am-4pm. SPEAK, a local campaigning organisation, will facilitate the day and you will leave with practical ideas on how you can campaign on justice issues as well as pitfalls to watch out for. Introducing Funding and Finance is a downloadable miniguide available from the Finance Hub. In a readily accessible format, this includes good practice tips and short exercises and includes sections on financial management, fundraising and loans.
The Sustainable Sun Needs-Analysis Tool is a diagnostic tool in A4 fold-out leaflet format, enabling organisations to plot their current organisational health, consider future development and display on a wall to monitor their progress. Organisations can use the tool in a group discussion to think about and highlight what is working well for them and what might be holding them back. The tool, including full instructions, is free to download.
Budget Yourselves is a freely downloadable programme available from FunderFinder that helps voluntary and community groups write effective budgets. It provides lots of advice about the process of making a budget, things that might need to go in it, and how to work out accurate costs.
Reducing the Risks - A Guide to Trustee Liabilities is a short guide to assessing the risks that a small charity or similar organisation faces produced by the Governance Hub. It provides information, advice and case studies. It can be purchased for £5 from NCVO (ISBN: 0 71991 700 X)
Picture This is a practical guide for anyone in a leadership role interested in getting their organisation involved in strategic thinking and implementation. It looks at scenario planning, ’a process of developing a view of alternative futures in order to craft a resilient strategy’.
