Free Norwich film invite on climate change
In June '07 the King's Centre in Norwich hosted a free two-part screening of 'An Inconvenient Truth', Al Gore's award-winning film on climate change.
Transforming Norwich and Christian Aid invited Christians to see the film on June 5 and June 12, and come to the centre of a movement to care for the planet and its poorest people.
Earlier this year Mr Gore, a former vice-president of the United States, won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Mr Gore is a Baptist, and during the film he movingly describes his calling as a young man to devote his life to this cause: "It's almost as if a window was opened through which the future was clearly visible. 'See that?' he says. 'See that? That's the future in which you are going to live your life.' "
According to the World Health Organisation, climate change is already causing the deaths of 150,000 people each year, mostly in developing countries.
The end titles of the film contain an exhortation: "If you believe in prayer, pray that people will have the strength to change." Christians in Norwich are invited to do that: come together to pray, worship, listen to the Word, watch the film, and seek a common mind about how to respond.
Norwich is one of the world's leading centres for the study of climate change, and churches in the city have a unique opportunity to influence the discussion.
Bishop David Atkinson of Thetford, who recently attended a presentation by the former vice-president, comments: "I find Al Gore's material inspiring, persuasive and motivating. I would encourage all Christians to take the opportunity to see the film."
