FUNDING NEWS
The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation (UK) has recently updated its guidelines. The trust has three broad priorities: healthcare & disability; community support and education and the arts. The community support priorities include drugs and alcohol rehab, ex- offenders, young people in need and financial exclusion. The annual £2.2m fund has two grant schemes: small grants (£500-£10,000) and larger grants (£10,000-£30,000 over three years). Most grants are generally under £5,000. The City Parochial Foundation aims to support activities which government agencies will not or are unlikely to fund. The deadline for the October grants committee is 30 May. Their open programme of £4m has four priority areas: 1.To improve employment opportunities for disadvantaged people 2.To promote the inclusion of recent arrivals to the UK 3)To promote social justice 4) To strengthen the voluntary and community sector There is no minimum or maximum size of grant. Ecclesiastical Insurance is offering cash prizes for the 12 most innovative church fundraising ideas. Entrants must explain what they are raising funds for, how they have organised a fundraising team and what unusual ideas they have used to attract interest and support from the local community. The Co-operative Group (whose businesses include Co-op Supermarkets and the Co-operative Bank) has a Community Fund that makes grants of between £100 and £5,000 to all kinds of community projects in areas where it has businesses. Applications can be made at any time and there is more information included in the application form.
Innovations in Mental Health is a new partnership initiative that is looking to find and develop local ideas that have the potential to grow into successful national projects with real impact. The Mental Health Foundation is handling applications and enquiries. The deadline for applications is Friday 18 May. There is an online application form. Every year Tesco gives away around £360,000 to communities where they have a store. This year, their Community Awards scheme has two priorities: 1. Organisations supporting children's welfare and children's educational projects, including special needs schools. 2. And Jesus Withdrew is a retreat-style conference for Christians involved in social action, community work and church leadership hosted by the Shaftesbury Society and Tearfund. The focus will be on avoiding burnout and getting refreshed. Action Planning have produced their latest quarterly briefing, Waymark. Amongst other useful and relevant information, this includes: · an article on why staff don't buy in to strategic planning· listings of forthcoming training and networking opportunities, such as a two-day course on securing major donors. What Makes a Good Application? is a free two-page pdf produced by the Charities Information Bureau. It is very useful and accessible for those new to fundraising as well as a useful reminder for those who've been at it for longer.
B&Q operates a waste donation scheme. This scheme makes 'waste' materials available to schools, charities and community groups. It may include slightly damaged tins of paint, off-cuts of timber, odd rolls of wallpaper and end of range materials. It is co- ordinated in-store either by the environmental champion, duty manager or warehouse manager. The new no-smoking legislation became law in Wales on 2 April, Northern Ireland on 30 April, and comes into effect in England on 1 July. This impacts charities as much as businesses and Sandy Adirondack's legal website has a useful article outlining what voluntary organisations need to do to comply. There are also useful websites with guidance on no-smoking policies, signs to print out etc for England and Wales.
Small non-company charities that have an income of £100,000 or less can choose to prepare receipts and payments accounts (the simplest form of accounts). A pack (CC16) produced by the Charity Commissioners provides a template for the layout and content of the trustees' annual report and accounts and provides a simple approach for small charities who do not wish to prepare full accrual accounts.
