Norwich Girls' Brigade thinks green

JULY 2007: beetleThe 5th Norwich Girls' Brigade Company, which meets at Witard Road Baptist Church in Heartsease, Norwich, have been working hard all term learning about 'The World in which we live'.

There are two groups that meet weekly in term time. 'The Explorers' are aged between 4 and 7 and 'J.S.B.' (Juniors, Seniors, Brigaders) are aged between 8 and 16. There are 30 girls in each group, making it the biggest branch in the county.

The girls have learnt about composting and written letters regarding endangered animals and recycling. They have even got the church where they meet (Witard Road Baptist) to start recycling! The girls have also researched and made projects on the Rainforest and made Carnival Costumes on this theme, as they will be participating in the Lord Mayor's Procession on Saturday July 14th.

To run alongside their theme this term, the GB ran a 'Nature and Wildlife' Photography Competition. The girls were asked to take photos in their own time, of anything they liked slugwith regard to Nature. Girls’ Brigade Captain, Kate Doran-Smith wrote to local companies that are in some way related to the theme, asking for donations to be given as prizes. She said "I was delighted by such a positive response. Thrigby Zoo donated some free tickets and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust gave some beautiful resources which make perfect prizes. I think we all have an obligation to teach the next generation about how vital it is we look after the World in which we live. Hopefully they will do a better job of it than we did. Getting local support for a fun activity inspires the girls and gets the point across."

Pictured above are 3 of the entries in the nature photography competition.
