Refugee mentors plea for Norwich volunteers

TimeTogetherLogoA mentoring scheme for refugees in Norwich is looking for volunteers to help it to support people, especially from Africa, as they settle into the local community.

Time Together is an inspiring initiative from the national volunteering organisation Time Bank and is working in partnership with the Refugee Council.

This project matches UK citizens with refugees in one-on-one mentoring relationships. The mentors help to support and guide their mentee as they settle into their new community and integrate into the UK. The relationship also helps the refugee achieve their goals - in education, employment and language learning.

We are looking for people in Norwich to volunteer as refugee mentors, and hope that your readers may be interested in taking part. It is a wonderful opportunity to use your own knowledge and experience to help another person, whilst giving you the chance to develop your own skills.

Volunteers are given full training and support throughout the duration of the year long mentoring relationship. Volunteer mentors spend about 5 hours per month with their mentee, helping them with anything from writing a cv, practising English, explaining how the internet works or even visiting a museum together.

If you and/ or anyone you know could spare this time, please contact me now to find out how
to get involved.

To date over 1500 refugees have been matched with mentors throughout 24 locations in the UK. Time Together has been recognised as a leader in the field of mentoring and praised for its commitment to best practice. In Norwich, there is a waiting list of mentees to be matched, all of whom have arrived in the UK during the past 7 months, are from Congo DRC and are French/English speaking.

If you would like to apply, or require more information on the scheme, please go to:
www.timetogether.org.uk, or contact me on 01473 297918.

Kind regards

Cathy Williams
Project Coordinator

As an outreach nurse I meet many of these refugees when they first arrive in Norwich. Many are are wonderful often highly qualified people who have been through such a lot and have spent many years in refugee camps. Many are Christians most have had to depend on God in very difficult situations. As Christians I feel that we need to be doing as much as possible to get along side, to welcome and help integrate them into our local faith communities. Mentorring is one opportunity for us to do this. Let us also be open to fully welcome those that are brave enough to attend our churches or ecumenical events. Some may choose to attend African churches but they still need our love and friendship.

I would like to become a volunteer and send my CV to the organisation. But the project coordinator is no longer working for the Refugee Council. I have redirected my E-amil to A.K but it was rejected by the recipient domain. Can anyone help me, please?
