FUNDING NEWS

 
WiredUpCashThe Chelsea Building Society Charitable Foundation makes donations of between £250 and £5,000 to charitable causes working to relieve suffering and disadvantage and to benefit local communities - especially the homeless, disadvantaged, vulnerable or socially excluded. The work must be within a ten-mile radius of a Chelsea Building Society branch office. Download the application form, phone 01242 271526 or email.
The Wood Family Trust has just been launched. One of its aims is to help the development of young people in Scotland and the rest of the UK. There is an open application process based on a two-stage approach. All guidelines are on the website or email.
Age Concern makes grants of over £11 million a year. They have three grant programmes, two of which offer grants towards new or expanding services or activities which directly benefit older people:
  • The Barclays Programme is for voluntary organisations in England who have an annual turnover of less than £50,000 per annum. The maximum grant is £150. You can download the guidelines here.
  • Bright Ideas offers grants of up to £2,000 for organisations in England and Wales with an income or turnover of less than £200,000 per annum. You can download the guidelines here. The main office phone number is 020 8765 7200.
The Reaching Communities Northern Ireland Lottery funding programme has been re- launched. Approximately £18 million is available to voluntary and community-led organisations that respond to needs identified by communities, and actively involve them in all aspects of the project. The grant size is £100,000 to £500,000, with 90% of funding for revenue costs. The deadline for full applications is 23 January 2008 but an Outline Proposal Form has to be submitted by 7 November. The Joint Educational Trust (JET) helps children who have suffered seriously at home or at school, or are at risk in some way. JET makes grants that enable these children to attend different schools, which would otherwise be out of reach financially, and where they have a real chance of making a new start. The Community Assets programme, funded by the Office of the Third Sector, has opened for applications - closing date 15 November. The programme offers grants of between £150,000 and £1 million for the refurbishment of existing buildings for the benefit of local communities. TRAINING NEWS AND EVENTS

The Catalyst Trust still has places on its Urban Mission Toolkit training courses. These start at the beginning of October, one evening a week for three ten-week terms, and are running in Bristol, Oxford and London. Keep the Promise, Keep the Gospel is a conference for Christian leaders on responding to HIV and AIDS. It is being held on 3 November at Southwark Cathedral and costs £10, including lunch. To book a place email Pat Wright.

McKenzie Friend Training Courses are being run by the Vincentian Millennium Partnership and Zacchaeus 2000 Trust in High Wycombe (6 October), London (20 October) and Carlisle (10 November). McKenzie Friend works with deprived families and individuals to support them when they are facing local authorities, bailiffs or court appearances for debt. ChangeAgents: Sustaining Transformation is the title of Faithworks' third national conference. This is happening 1-3 November at City Temple in central London. Speakers include Steve Chalke, Bishop James Jones and Patrick Dixon. The cost is from £110, with a special offer of bringing a friend for £50 if booked before 12 October. From Branding to Buzz is a conference being run by NCVO on 12 November in London. This aims to explore how voluntary organisations communicate with their supporters whether it is through website or direct mail. The cost to NCVO members is £147, including lunch. WiredUpBooksA free 'plain English' guide to the Charities Act 2006 has been produced primarily aimed at trustees of charities with an income below £500,000. It explains the main provisions of the act and sets out where you can go for further information or guidance. PQASSO is a practical quality assurance system specifically for small voluntary sector organisations produced by the Charities Evaluation Service (CES). The Cranfield Trust provides free management consultancy support to the voluntary sector through a national register of highly skilled volunteers from the commercial sector. What is a business plan? is a helpful booklet available as a free download from the Big Lottery Fund website. Business plans are often vital evidence for funders, so if you haven't got one, this is a good place to start.
