FUNDING NEWS
The third round of the community grants programme 'Connecting Communities Plus' is open for applications until 8 January. The fund is administered by the Community Development Foundation and has four priorities centred on improving the confidence and experiences of people from black and ethnic minority groups and their communities. Grants are up to £12,000 and briefing events are being held. Click here for guidance notes and an application form. The Lloyds TSB Foundation has recently redeveloped their website. The foundation makes grants to charities working to tackle disadvantage across England and Wales, with a particular focus on supporting small and medium underfunded charities. Grants have totalled over £115m in the past five years. Application procedures are divided between local or regional concerns and national groups. There are generic guidelines that were updated in spring 2007. For more information email or phone 0870 411 1223.
The Balcombe Charitable Trust makes grants of between £4,000 and £50,000 for education, the environment and health and welfare. In 2005/06 they received a one-off gift of £15m suggesting that grant making will be on the increase. The deadline for applications to BBC Children in Need is 30 November. In 2006 £33m was raised and used to provide grants to organisations working with children disadvantaged by, for example, abuse, disability or deprivation. Check eligibility using the guidelines, and apply using the online application form. Phone 020 8576 7788 or email.
turn2us is a new online service that provides individuals with details of all of the benefits and grants available to them from both statutory and voluntary organisations. There is an online questionnaire which collects the relevant information. In many cases, applications for support can be made directly from the website and people are informed by email or text to their mobile phone. For more information email or phone 020 7396 6700.

The Directory of Social Change is holding The Fundraising Conference 2007 on 22 November in central London. The cost is from £175 and there are 14 different workshops to choose from, each looking at the latest in fundraising techniques, tips, news and case studies. The Responsibility is Ours is a conference being run by the Criminal Justice Advisory Group in the Diocese of Worcester on 20 November in Bromsgrove. Costing £55 (incl. lunch and refreshments), the conference will explore the needs of prisoners and their families and the possibilities of community chaplaincy. Church Action on Poverty (CAP) are holding a conference on 10 November entitled Regeneration - Death or New Life for Communities. It is being held at Gateshead Civic Centre and examines community views on the changing faces of their areas, with responses from politicians and church leaders. How to fundraise from the community is a one-day course being run in central London on 20 November by DSC. The course aims to explore the key principles of fundraising from from the community and using volunteer networks as a resource. Exploring innovation in Christian community work is a one-day workshop focussing on social enterprise. It is being held on 13 November at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, London. Run by Grooms-Shaftesbury, the day costs £10 and includes lunch. It will cover the basics, such as what social enterprise is, as well as practical steps to promote innovation. Love's Not for Sale is the title of a tour going to Birmingham, Cambridge, Leeds and Edinburgh during November. It is being organised by CHASTE (Churches Alert to Sex Trafficking across Europe) to encourage greater response to the misery of human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation. Tickets are £3.50 and available from the CHASTE website.

NGO Media have published a one-sided A4 sheet giving four pointers to effective campaigning. It is a distillation of the main points from a campaigning conference held in September. Download it for free.
How Small Groups Can Raise Big Funds is a new book by Jessica Ruston published by White Ladder Press. It contains hundreds of fundraising ideas covering community events, sponsored events, balls and banquets, and auctions and sales. It also includes advice on how to organise and publicise local events. The book is available at £7.99 and can be purchased from Amazon.
Voluntary Action Media Unit has produced a new volunteer recruitment website - VolunteerGenie. Whilst this has a strong media bias, you can freely access a lot of useful information as well as signposting to other sources of help.
