Norwich Council in new dialogue with churches

CityChurchDialogLogoMore than 30 representatives of Norwich Christian churches and organisations met with Norwich City Council on November 1 as part of a new initiative for greater partnership between the church and the city.

Initiated by Transforming Norwich, the ‘City/Church Dialogue’ has been in existence for three years. However, this is the first time that churches have been invited to appoint representatives to attend.

“It was very fruitful”, said Nicholas Vesey who chaired the meeting alongside Bridget Buttinger, the City Council’s deputy chief executive. “There are many areas where we can be working more closely with the City Council, and we are beginning to identify them.

“We feel that churches could be commissioned, and paid, to do work that we are naturally good at, such as community building.  At our next session that will be on the agenda. We are also looking at how we can help more with schools and colleges”.

The meeting was originally to be chaired by the council chief executive Laura McGillivray, however she was unwell.

Bridget Buttinger, in her place, presented the council’s vision for the future, and Nicholas Vesey presented ideas for a new initiative to care for those in need.

Over 3,000 people from different churches were represented at the meeting.

Is there any way that The Full Gospel Business Men www.fgbmfi.org.uk or the Stopper Copper Society www.stopacopper.co.uk can help?

Public money should be spent democratically - not theocratically. The people of Norwich elect councillors to decide where money should be spent - this does not entitle them to delegate delivery of services to those with a narrow religous bias as to who shoud benefit.

i take it that you have very little brain power Alan if you actualy think that ALL christians are like this!
the reason that this nation is in such a state is that God has been PC'd out of most things.

Second of all, if Christians do behave that way then I would not say they were real Christians. I'd say they are just people who take something out of the bible and form their own beliefs around it and ignore the fact that Christianity is a faith of love. We should love God and one another.

I am very sad that Alan and David have such strong biased views about faith groups and particularly Christians. My church does support and encourage the women and children and some of us help as volunteers to run a Family Contact Centre. I have several gay and lesbian friends, some of whom attend my previous church. I am comfortable to hug them in public, I am not ashamed of or embarrassed by them.
We are all biased to some degree (eg politically) but inspite of this we need to love and accept one-another where we are, as commanded by Jesus, and leave any convicting to the Holy Spirit as and when He considers it timely to do so.
Many Christians are hard working skilled people with a heart for what they volunteer for. It is only logical that Government should work with them.
