Norwich Christian outreach continues Tim's vision

The vision of community outreach work at the Jenny Lind Park in Norwich continues with the appointment of co-ordinator Gemma Stapleford, which means the venue is available to hire for other local groups to use.

The Jenny Lind Park Community Work operates from premises based in the old post office shop on Vauxhall Street near Norwich city centre.

The work was spearheaded by Tim Stapleford, who was passionate about supporting local young people by running football sessions and creating a positive place for them in their own community. The work flourished thanks to Tim and the support of local churches and volunteers. Tim sadly died in 2016 and his daughter Gemma is continuing his legacy by co-ordinating the project. Gemma said, “This was a really exciting step forward in growing our professional image but more importantly, it gives our volunteers and the people we work with a clear contact point.”

With the help of funders such as YAB more of the project’s volunteers have been trained in safeguarding and first aid which is crucial for continuing the Thursday football sessions.

Gemma said, “We’re really excited about providing more sport and activity for our young people that demonstrates Jesus’ love, throughout the week.”

Gemma’s role involves managing the building and co-ordinating the bookings. She is keen that the newly renovated space is used to its full potential, not just for young people, but all members of the community.

A logo has been developed for the project so that it is easily identified. The council recently fitted the shops on Vauxhall Street with new windows and blue signage. Gemma said, “It’s important that we continue with the new colour scheme to symbolically show our place in the community. You may also notice the cross in the tree leaves and stained glass effect which act as a subtle message of our faith.”

The interior of the building has been improved: heaters are installed, as well as a kitchen, disabled-access toilet, wireless printer, projector and Wi-Fi. Gemma said, “We also have a large pile of wood ready to be transformed into our own custom bench unit for our young people!”
