Calais crisis collection organised from Norwich

Calais2 by Geronimo Matulessy
Moved by the plight of refugees, Norwich resident Izzi Day is collecting items to be sent to Calais mid-September and is appealing to local churches to get involved.

Izzi wants to take action after being moved by the plight of the thousands of people who have now congregated in Calais to escape conflict and persecution in their own countries. After watching countless news bulletins about the deplorable living conditions for thousands of people, and the growing humanitarian crisis on the border, Izzi felt compelled to do something. She decided to organise the Norwich collection point for Calais Action from her city home on Stafford Street, which will become a temporary storeroom for supplies, due to be collected mid-September.

Calais1 by Geronimo MatulessySocial media is proving a powerful tool to spread the word, and Izzi has been already overwhelmed by the response to the Facebook page she created.

Izzi is asking the Norwich Christian community to donate items and to publicise the collection amongst local churches. She said, “We have a short period of time to collect as much as possible. So please give what you can, and lets all be thankful we'll not be spending winter in a tent.”

Items can be dropped at Izzi’s house before September 13. Contact her on izziday@gmail.com or 07591 137777 or through the facebook page for location details and to arrange a time to drop off – either daytimes or evenings.

Izzi said, “If you have time to write a short letter of hope, that would be amazing. I'd love to send a batch of letters with our donation to let those suffering in Calais know that the ordinary people of Norwich have not forgotten them.”
