Yarmouth catholic white-box 75
Yarmouth church transformed into 'big white box'

The roof of St Mary's Catholic Church in Regent Road, Great Yarmouth, is being completely replaced and a sponsor-a-slate appeal has been launched to complete the funding.

Work to re-roof the sanctuary, both side chapels, and old sacristy has already been completed. This current phase involves re-roofing the nave itself. The entire roof has now been removed, necessitating a white scaffolding shroud to protect the interior and to enable services to continue.

The removal of the old concrete tiles has revealed that much more work is needed to the supporting timbers due to their weight. They will be replaced by slate tiles, replacing the originals which had been stripped in the 1960s.

The total cost of the project is around £600,000, with a new grant of just under £300,000 from Historic England enabling the project to proceed. The church is now inviting people to sponsor a slate for £10 in order to fund a 20pc funding contribution of £125,000. In return a message of up to 30 words will be inscribed on the tile and a photographic record kept for posterity.
